Evil Woman Good Whiskey 1949
A famous distillery is the scene of a gruesome accident.
"Evil Woman, Good Whiskey" tells the story of a famous whiskey distillery run by a matriarch and two sons. The brothers are at odds about how to run the business and the mother seems to revel in the competition between them. When an employee dies after a machine takes off his hand, the mother is taken into cistody by the police and charged with manslaughter. This tragedy causes the brothers to pull together to save her from prosecution by proving that her competitor tinkered with the machinery. The plot twist comes when we learn that it was actually Michael’s wife (played by La Treque) who tinkered with the machine hoping to remove her mother in law from the picture and allow her husband to run the show.
The story takes place in the Scottish Highlands though filmed in the back lot of Mitsumount. Blanc La Rocque and Michael O’Malley play the brothers with Agnes Moore as the mother. Elva La Treque in the role of La Rocque’s wife proves her reputation as the embodiment of noir.
